Invitation

You are cordially invited to “Essentially, Artful,” an East African visual art exhibit, plus so much more!

Essentially, Artful
December 2, 2017 | 6p-9p
Uptown Art House
3412 Connecticut Ave NW

Allow me to give you a bit of background.  There is an undeniable absence and a dearth of understanding of most contemporary East African Art. Art that is distinctly East African has been sparse on the global map, antiquated and mostly taken out of context. For instance, we are all familiar with images of pharaohs and pyramids, but little is known on how they relate to the populations of that region today. As a result, in most cases, contemporary visual art from East African countries has not been properly appreciated, and in settings outside of an artist’s country of origin or even just their circle of friends, has been relegated to the diminutive category of “airport art” or tourist nick knacks, regardless of the purpose of its creation, or its quality.

There are many reasons for that, of course – political crises and conflict within these countries; a lack of institutions to support the artists; general devaluing of art from Africa in the larger world; etc.

As such, a collective of artists from the region have initiated a project to right this wrong, and take on the tremendous task of presenting to the world a nuanced and fuller narrative of this region through their visual art.  To do so, they’ve proposed a virtual online platform, called the East African Visual Art Society (E.A.V.A.S), where they can collate, curate and make available East African art and connect it to the wider world.

It’s a massive project, and one that requires a lot of initiative and support. The campaign to get it off the ground is being debuted this coming weekend!

“Essentially, Artful” is an event being carried out on December 2, 2017, 6p-9p at uptown Art House (3412 Connecticut Ave NW, D.C.) and includes work by some of the artists (with a focus on Sudanese art), food, music, merchandise and dialogue.

As an entity with a relationship to Art/Africa, we would greatly appreciate your attendance at this event. Please find attached the flyer, and a short bio on the artists.

Please direct all inquiries to info@eavas.org or eavas.info@gmail.com

Thank you and we hope to see you there!
